3 Creek Ranch Compound
Jackson, Wyoming
Completion Date: 2009
This house and guesthouse are sited within an ecologically sensitive golf community. The terrain is characterized variously by mature cottonwood and evergreen stands as well as wetlands, spring creeks, and open meadow.
Integrating the natural and the manmade is the dominant intention of the design. The project finds this expression in a series of individual building volumes that respond directly to the varied topography of the landscape. The primary mass of the house is a taller structure that echoes the profile of the surrounding mature woodland, the secondary volumes step down as the site changes from dense forest to open space and streambed.
Interior and exterior are further connected by means of a garden courtyard, which is flanked by windows that bring the outside in. A circulation path embraces the perimeter of the courtyard, linking the building volumes to each other and to the central garden. In contrast to the intimate organization of the entrance elevation, the home’s northwest aspect capitalizes on the site’s expansive mountain views by orienting the main living and entertaining spaces out toward Glory Peak. Several terraces extend into the landscape, again softening the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living. Exterior cladding is of a rustic palette and materiality with copper, stone, and exposed timber blending the building with its surroundings.
