Crescent H Compound
Wilson, Wyoming
Completion Date: 2004
This project is located on a secluded and densely wooded hillside property on the Crescent H Ranch and consists of a main residence and a separate house for a full time caretaker. The 9,950 sf main House was carefully located on a slight knoll providing views to the owner’s newly created fish pond, the surrounding mountains and the valley below. The owners expressed a great interest in the Craftsman style, inspired by the works of the early 20th century architects, Charles and Henry Greene. The design intent of this residence was to incorporate the spirit and craft of that era into buildings firmly grounded in the American Mountain West today.
The approach to the main house meanders through the old growth timber of the site and lands the visitor at the top of the knoll in a paved court at the main level of the house. The house is organized around a curved axis that follows the contours of the landscape. Along this axis, a 60 foot long curved gallery connects and separates the major living spaces that open to views to the pond and mountains to the east. Guest suites and secondary living spaces are located below with stone terraces on level with the surrounding natural landscape.
The primary structural elements and all exterior materials of both houses are of premium grade redwood crafted with authentic mortise and tenon joinery. The flooring, wall paneling, cabinets and trim throughout these structures are milled from American cherry and the custom windows have been constructed from plantation mahogany.
The design finds its fullest expression in the placement of the owners’ extensive art collection within the craftsmanship of the house.
