Gros Ventre Butte Residence
Jackson, Wyoming
Completion Date: 2002
This 7,600 sf house in Jackson, Wyoming is set on the side of a butte, next to an aspen grove, looking east at the hay meadows in the valley below and the mountains beyond. Due to the slope of the site, the house is organized with its primary living areas at the level of the entrance court and a garden bordered on two sides by the house. The lower level contains bedrooms that open out to the natural grade. The house is in three volumes; the garage, the living/kitchen/dining area and the master bedroom/bath/dressing area.
The exterior walls are western red cedar siding on a base of architectural concrete, scored and stained a deep earthy brown. The windows are bronze colored, with large openings for the spectacular views, and smaller operating windows for ventilation and a connection to the outdoors. Inside, the main living space is spanned with a series of heavy douglas fir timbers. At the entrance, a gallery space lines the garden court, its stained and polished concrete floor absorbing the heat from the sun in the day. In 2010 an addition was completed that contains a home theatre, entertainment living area and two guest suites.
