Sundance Ridge Lot 5 Residence
Sundance, Utah
Completion Date: 2009
A reductive use of regionally appropriate materials and vernacular details ground this building in its western context, yet challenge conventional concepts of mountain living.
The Sundance Ridge homes are limited to a maximum of 5,000 sf, and the two-story solution for this residence additionally reduces the building’s footprint. A 47-foot-long vaulted volume contains the living, dining, and kitchen spaces, all situated along an axis defined by spectacular mountain views at either end. To maximize privacy the four bedroom suites are located at the building’s extremities.
Environmental impact is of the utmost concern to the project is significantly reduced through the use of solar panels as well as energy-efficient hydronic radiant floor heating. Exterior materials were selected in part for their extreme durability and include regionally quarried stone, rough-sawn cedar siding (milled from sustainably harvested forests), and a roof made from recycled heavy-gauge steel sheet metal. Among the interior finish selections are local stone and rift-sawn oak floors, integrally colored concrete countertops, and handmade ceramic tile in the bathrooms. The environmental mandate also extends to the landscape design, which is restorative in attitude with low water use as the primary criterion for plant selection.
