Sundance Ridge Lot 8 Residence
Sundance, Utah
Completion Date: 2007
This 5,600 sf house for a film producer and Sundance Partner is the pilot project for Founders Ridge, a development of private residences in Robert Redford’s eco-conscious Sundance Preserve. Equal attention was given to timeless values of strong design and new sustainable building technologies in order to achieve a refined and green mountain resort home.
To reduce the structure’s footprint on the land and to take full advantage of mountain views from a very small hillside site, the main living areas and master suite were placed on the second floor while the secondary bedrooms; mudroom, laundry and entry were located on the ground floor. The small trapezoidal building envelope led to breaking the house into two distinct volumes, linked by a two-story glass and copper connector that houses the entry hall and stair.
Many sustainable elements were incorporated into the design, with a focus on integrating them seamlessly. Photovoltaic roofing elements, laminated directly on the metal roof between the standing seams, are barely visible yet provide the owner with substantial energy savings. Both exterior and interior materials reflect the environmental ethic of the house. Stone is locally quarried and major structural columns are round steel shapes. Lumber is Forest Stewardship Council-certified, and much of the exterior siding is reclaimed barn wood. Eco-friendly materials were also selected for interior insulation and interior finishes, such as low-VOC paint and a blow-in blanket insulation system in flooring and walls.
