Timbers at Granite Ridge
Teton Village, Wyoming
Completion Date: 2008
Located at the base of the Teton Village ski resort, these eight town house residences are designed as ski-in ski-out vacation homes. Conceived to conform to the rustic vernacular of the mountain village, the development nonetheless articulates an original aesthetic vision through a simple, pared-down quality of form and materiality.
The key challenge involved situating generously sized town home residences within small lots while ensuring a sympathetic relationship between the buildings and the natural surroundings. By tucking the homes within a mature aspen stand, the design team is able to maintain the client’s 3,600-square-foot program for each residence without overpowering the site and setting. Both the client’s needs and design intent are again served through the orientation of the buildings, which frame and face onto the ski mountain itself. Ample south-facing decks and terraces reinforce the link between landscape and living space and will also add the benefit of extended sunlight hours to these southern elevations.
The master plan allows for three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms per townhome, as well as a media room and outdoor jacuzzi. Kitchen, dining, and living rooms open to each other to form a single entertainment space. Locally available materials have been selected wherever possible, and residences are characterized by cedar timber-frames clad in wood siding and dry-stack stone veneer.
