Twin Creek Ranch Guest House
Driggs, Idaho
Completion Date: 2006
Nestled within an aspen grove, this project consists of a guest quarters and garage addition to a residence. The new structure aims to blend with the traditional, rustic main house without merely mimicking the home in form and materials. The design solution consists in a simple, plainspoken beauty, where form is direct and materials both connect to the original building design and offer variations in texture and palette.
To establish continuity between the main log home and the addition, a simple rectangle with stained cedar siding maintains the shape and tonality of the original building. The house plan opens to broad eastern views of the Big Hole and Teton mountains, yet preserves a sense of privacy and modesty though the structure’s careful placement within the woods. In addition to a master bedroom and children’s bunkrooms, three bathrooms and a “great room” for entertaining complete the plan. A wet bar and game table add additional recreational facilities to the standard guest house program.
The residence derives certain richness through careful attention to materials and craftsmanship. Within the residence hickory wood and re-sawn Douglas fir beams comprise the flooring and ceilings, respectively. Roofs of copper and hand-split cedar shakes have been selected both for high performance value in the extreme Idaho climate and for their aesthetic qualities.
