Wilson Bungalows
Wilson, Wyoming
Completion Date: 2006
These three townhouses express a dual objective: exteriors are designed to align the homes with the humble character and modest scale of this small western town, while interior appointments work as a modern counterpoint to regional architectural traditions.
With simple gabled roofs, wraparound reclaimed-timber porches, and rough-sawn cedar siding, the 2300-square-foot homes assimilate into the established patterns of Wilson, minimizing the impact of new development on surrounding homes and respecting, rather than challenging, the ramshackle nature of the neighborhood.
Within, the homes reflect a bolder sensibility, with an emphasis on maximizing light and space. The traditional house plan is inverted, with a master suite and integrated kitchen/living/dining room on the upper elevation. Exposed trusses and a vaulted ceiling extend from this “great room” into the master bedroom, unifying the living spaces and giving generous access to sunlight and mountain views. An elevated deck projects from the living room, further connecting interior and exterior and making efficient use of the small buildable lot size. With two bedrooms and a two-car garage at the ground floor, the design completes the client program while taking a compact approach to space and scale.
