Bear Ridge Residence
Jackson, Wyoming
Completion Date: In Design
This home will be one of the first in the Snake River Sporting Club development south of Jackson. Strict building covenants limit design choices, but a refined interpretation of vernacular motifs brings the residence into its own time and place.
Working with roughly 8,500 sf in program on a small, gradually sloping building envelope adjacent to a golf course, the project team arrived at a stacked solution for the residence: a series of volumes step down with the slope of the site, minimizing large masses and aligning the project with the landscape.
The house is designed to maximize both privacy and contact with the exterior landscape. Upstairs bedrooms are clustered close to a sage butte, with private balconies extending each room into its natural surroundings. Public spaces front the golf course and have ample glazing to take advantage of mountain vistas and passive solar gain.
Reductive, Asian-inspired detailing tempers the rustic sensibility. This includes horizontal window banding as well as stepped, terrace-like retaining walls that will enclose custom water features, such as a Zen-inspired spa bath. Asymmetrical roof lines bookend each other at the southern elevation, sheltering the house from summer glare, minimizing exposure in the private spaces, and presenting a modest profile of the house to the street and golf course.
