Queens Lane Grounds House
Jackson, Wyoming
Completion Date: In Design
Surrounded by lush meadow and wetlands, the Grounds House project consists of a caretaker’s residence as well as a workshop, greenhouse, storage, and garage facility. The design intent is to articulate an innovative, rather than derivative, architecture appropriate to the rural mountain west as it is today.
The design solution envisions a synthesis of fabricated and natural elements. Two single-story geometric volumes of 3,000 sf and 1,000 sf, respectively, interlock to create a mechanistic, sculptural structure. In contrast to these angular planes, the building softens its profile by tapering at the extremities, so that the form curves toward the ground and appears to merge with the landscape.
A strong environmental ethic and strict budgetary constraints inform the project. In order to service both energy efficiency and cost efficiency, prefabricated SIPS panels will comprise the wall and roof structure, and photovoltaic panels and ground-source heat will ensure minimal impact on the environment while maximizing the building’s utility and performance.
As exterior cladding, an oxidized steel skin will invite and accelerate the weathering process, allowing exposure to the elements to enhance rather than degrade the aesthetic quality of the building. Recycled materials, such as particleboard, MDF, and masonite, will characterize the interior finishes.
