Wilson Office Building
Wilson, Wyoming
Completion Date: 2010
For this proposed 6,000 sf office building, the project team aims to set an example of environmental sustainability for the town of Wilson while also working to root the building in the context of this small, traditionally rustic town.
Located at the base of Teton Pass, the office is designed for maximum flexibility to allow tenants to customize their work environments. With this in mind, the design team arrived at simple building forms, comprised of two levels connected by a double height lobby space and public stair. The building mass is articulated with projections from the upper floor that give the elevations texture and depth. A covered porch further breaks up the two-story mass and echoes the modest profiles and familiar expressions of neighboring buildings. Windows are located on a module to allow flexibility in configuring workspace while also taking full advantage of natural daylight and the site’s magnificent views of the Tetons, Glory Bowl and adjacent peaks.
Green building strategies are a high priority for this project, but modern efficiency must be carefully moderated to align the project with the character of surrounding older buildings. As a solution, the materials palette will rely heavily on wood, but it will come from reclaimed and Forest Stewardship Council-certified sources. Other sustainable choices include structural insulated panels for walls, solar panels for the roof, low-flow plumbing fixtures, materials of a high-recycled content, and non-toxic paint finishes. The site itself is the main recycling hub for the town of Wilson and will continue to serve the general public in this role.
