Logan Pavilion Lounge
Jackson, Wyoming
Completion Date: 2000
The Pavilion Lounge is a recreational outbuilding located on a windswept sagebrush plain outside of Jackson, Wyoming. It functions as a guesthouse, an entertainment building, an office and a place to contemplate.
The 860 sf structure borrows its form from the vernacular shed and contains living, dining, kitchen and entertainment space. The open living volume, clad in cedar siding, is served by oxidized steel clad attachments: entry, bath, mechanical, woodstove chimney, and library. The chimney acts as a marker for the site.
The structural design is a simple and direct post and beam system. Steel columns on the exterior support composite wood and steel beams, which in turn support an expansive sheltering roof. Separating the exterior structure from the interior allows for a taught veil of glazing to separate the living area from the landscape. A hovering cedar deck projects forty feet into the sagebrush.
The interior of the shed volume is characterized by the exposed structure of the roof plane hovering over the transparent west wall. Galvanized steel decking adds to the roof’s feeling of lightness. Raw MDF cabinetry, blackened steel countertops and black concrete floors complete the interior expression. The character of the bathroom offers a contrast to that of the living room. Stone tile walls and flooring reflect light penetrating small punched openings in the exterior skin.
