Westside Medical Center
Wilson, Wyoming
Completion Date: 2007
Designed for the small community of Wilson, this medical center and office complex assumes a modest profile in keeping with the character of the buildings’ surroundings that include the historic Hardeman Barn, an elementary school, and a residential neighborhood.
The center is comprised of two double-story buildings, 11,500 square feet in total. The north building accommodates four doctors and their support staff as well as several laboratory and office spaces, an x-ray facility, and conference room. The south building functions as a commercial office space. The buildings are oriented to share a parking lot and an open space, and views of the southern Tetons are maximized at the buildings’ north and west elevations.
In order to achieve the small-scale aesthetic appropriate to the neighborhood, the design team made a concerted effort to break down the building volumes as much as possible. Large roof overhangs, exposed exterior columns, and a variety of forms and materials maintain the character of the town. The design also references Wilson’s agricultural heritage with the use of barrel-vaulted roofs in combination with the low-sloped roofs typically seen on hay storage sheds.
